Farm Fun Books
Here are some of our favorite farm books to pair with your Farm Fun sensory kit! We love utilizing our public library to check out new books each month to keep both children and adults engaged. Some of these we read when we were children, and some we have read only recently in the classroom. All of them will enhance your child’s play and learning as they work with their Farm Fun Kit.
We’ve sorted the books by age below. We hope you enjoy reading and learning with your child!
0-3
The Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown
Big Red Barn is included in our Farm Fun sensory kit this month! We love it because of the engaging and rhythmic text that goes through the cycle of a day on a farm. The illustrations are sweet and the gentle simplicity of the story make it a perfect bedtime read.
The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle
We are huge fans of Eric Carle and love the illustrations in this story and also the sensory aspect of feeling the spider’s ever growing web.
Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton
This is my toddler’s favorite right now! We love singing it to him and inserting some country twang.
Farm La Granja DK Bilingual Touch and Feel
This book pairs perfectly with our farm vocabulary cards! It also incorporates your child’s senses as they touch and feel the different animals. We’ve used this in the classroom and the children love it!
Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle
Little Blue Truck touches on helpfulness and working as a team and the rhyming cadence is soothing for little ones. If your child is vehicle obsessed like mine, this is a great read as well!
No Sleep for the Sheep by Karen Beaumont
This poor sheep. All he wants is to rest and is awoken by every animal on the farm imaginable. This book is a fun one for reviewing animal sounds with your little one!
3-6
Click, Clack, Moo by Doreen Cronin
This one is a fan favorite with so many preschoolers we know! It is quirky, hilarious, and the back and forth between the animals and farmer Brown is golden. We also love utilizing this book when talking about letter writing with older children.
The Year At Maple Hill Farm by Alice Provensen
The Year At Maple Hill Farm goes through the months of the year and what happens to the farm in each season. Such a great book for teaching children about seasons and the passage of time! We love the illustrations as well.
The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry
The scarecrow is not to be trifled with. When a small crow is injured though, the scarecrow saves the crow and a unlikely friendship forms. This book is beautiful, sweet, and teaches about the seasons. It is a perfect book to add to your shelf during the fall!
Meanwhile Back at the Ranch by Trinka Hakes Noble
This was one of our grandpa’s favorite books to read us. As an adult, I appreciate it so much more! It is hilarious, outlandish and such a fun read.
On the Farm at the Market by Brian G. Karas
This is a great book to teach children about community and how we are all connected. It would be a wonderful book to read before or after a trip to your local farmer’s market.
The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash by Trinka Hakes Kellogg
Jimmy’s boa goes on a class field trip to the farm and wrecks havoc! This is a classic that has stood the test of time. The illustrations are so good!
Duck on a Bike and Duck on a Tractor by David Shannon
These are crowd favorites with the children in our lives! These silly books and illustrations make getting into character easy.
The Hundred-Year Barn by Patricia MacLachlan
In this joyful celebration generations of family and their tender connection to the barn, Newbery Medal–winning author Patricia MacLachlan and award-winning artist Kenard Pak spin a tender and timeless story about the simple moments that make up a lifetime.
