Construction Zone Book List

To enhance your child’s play and encourage literacy, here are some of our favorite books about construction to read along with your Construction Zone sensory kit.

Mighty, Mighty Construction Site by Sherri Duskey and Tom Lichtenheld

Something about a book that rhymes really draws little ones in! We have found that many books about construction are full of delightful rhymes. Mighty, Mighty Construction Site is a great way to introduce children to the names and jobs of construction vehicles as they work together to build a road.

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey and Tom Lichtenheld

Even construction vehicles get tired after a long day at the construction site. This is the perfect book for bedtime as you say “goodnight” to each sleepy vehicle.

Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney

This is one of my (Kate’s) favorite construction books! A story about a helpful excavator as he tries to fine he place with the other, bigger, trucks. In the end the little excavator realizes there is a job for every unique vehicle at the construction site.

Roadwork by Sally Sutton

Building a road is noisy work! Follow a crew as they build a road making lots of unique sounds along the way. A book full of onomatopoeias, this is such a fun and engaging read for any age.

Tip Tip Dig Dig by Emma Garcia

Building a new park take lots of work and lots of different construction vehicles. Such a sweetly illustrated book, this is perfect for littles as they learn the job of each vehicle and how each one is important in order to finish a construction job.

Dazzling Diggers by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker

The Amazing Machine series is perfect for little inquiring minds. With informative illustrations and lots of interesting facts about diggers, this book will answer all of your child’s questions about diggers and you might learn something too!

Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton

The classic story of Mike Mulligan and his unstoppable steam shovel. When faced with the seemingly impossible task of digging the basement for a new building, the whole town rallies around mike and his steam shovel as they race to beat the odds!

10 Little Construction Vehicles by Annie Bailey

This is a favorite of Emily’s little one. It tells the story of ten vehicles who navigate a busy construction site. Perfect for kids who love to count, who are learning to count, or learning to recognize numbers, 10 Little Construction Trucks is a sweet and simple book for any occasion!

One Big Building by Michael Dahl

I love this counting books because not only does it highlight the construction vehicles, but the people who work hard to build a building. This is a wonderful book for the youngest reader as you count all the things to see at a building site.

Construction by Sally Sutton

Included in our Construction Zone sensory kit, Construction follows a crew as they build a library. Encompassing the building of the structure and the inside of the building, this book is a great insight into what it takes to build a library all the way from beginning to end and all the sounds that go along with a construction site!
